| Reach Out and Read offers several ways in which you can use your skills to help give the gift of reading to children in need in our community: Waiting Room Readers: Readers are needed in many of our waiting rooms to read to children at least one hour per week. Recruiters: We need passionate people to help individual clinics build their volunteer reading groups. Work in a neighborhood of your choice to help spread the word about the need for volunteer readers in a nearby clinic. Book Rustlers: Work from home or your neighborhood! Help us round up book donations. Books for children ages 5 and younger are especially needed. Book Wranglers We need help boxing and preparing books for monthly delivery to our participating clinics. Work with ROR’s book coordinator at KU Medical Center in a safe and fun environment. Help is usually needed during the first or second week of the month during regular office hours. Book Labelers: Nimble-fingered helpers needed to place color-coded dots on new books. Thousands of books need to be labeled each month for distribution to our participating pediatric clinics. Volunteers can work at their own pace during regular office hours at KU Med Center and at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Poster Producers: Artsy-crafty types needed to hand design special event posters for health clinic waiting rooms. This is a great one-time project, especially for groups – since we need to make about 30 posters at a time. We need new posters about six times a year to announce special events like National Family Literacy Month or Dr. Seuss Day. Speakers Bureau: Help spread the word about ROR-KC. Friends of ROR-KC: Support our program by becoming a member of the Friends of Reach Out and Read. |
